The 2011 London Notting Hill Carnival will take place over the weekend 27th-29th August 2011.

London Notting Hill Carnival 2010

The London Notting Hill Carnival will take place over the Bank Holiday weekend 28th-30th August 2010. The London Notting Hill Carnival website has been update to add the photos from 2009 and the band lists will be updated when they are available. London Notting Hill Carnival 2009

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and the City of Westminster Councils have made it clear to London Notting Hill Carnival Ltd, the organiser of the annual carnival, that the last float must be past the judging point in Great Western Road by 6:30pm so that it can be clear of the route in Ladbroke Grove by dusk at about 9pm. An upper limit has also been set on the volume of sound from mobile floats. While there are some of the bands who appear not to be willing to accept these restrictions the majority have agreed to abide by them in the interests of making the Carnival a safer event.

Carnival 2008

The end of the Carnival in 2008 was marred by a confrontation between trouble-makers and the police in Ladbroke Grove and this led to serious consideration by the authorities as to how this could be avoided in future. The other recurring problem is the excessive level of sound from some of the floats that makes it difficult for the police to hear instructions on their radios and the health and safety issue of whether the police are being subjected to a situation that is causing damage to their hearing. These and other matters will be the subject of discussion with the organisers of Carnival in 2009.

Council organises Carnival weekend trip to Folkestone for 40 residents

For the fourth year running, from 25-28th August, the Council of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is organising a seaside trip to Folkestone for up to 40 borough residents aged 65 and over so that they can have the chance to relax in a quieter atmosphere while the Carnival spirit takes over in the Notting Hill area where the normally live.
Councillor Merrick Cockell, leader of the Council, said: "Carnival is a wonderfully exciting event but it does draw vast crowds. We recognise that for some people, particularly the most vulnerable in the community, this can make it a difficult and stressful weeekend. These trips have been very successful during the last three years; priority will be given to fisrt-timers over those who have been on the previous breaks"
The trip is being organised by the Council's Adult Care Services (020 7598 4509) and the closing date for applications in 1st June 2007

RBKC Grant to LNHC Ltd towards the cost of a new website

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is proposing to make a grant to London Notting Hill Carnival Ltd towards the cost of developing a new website. The Council believes that the development, maintenance and regular updsating of such a website, with appropriate links to the relevant statutory authorities involved with the Notting Hill Carnival, represents the best way to publicise carnival-related matters.

Grant to LNHC Ltd from London Councils (formerly Association of London Government)

London Councils, which provides grants that are strategic to London as a whole on behalf of all London Boroughs, has given a grant to London Notting Hill Carnival Ltd, the company that currently organises the annual Notting Hill Carnival, towards the cost of a business plan.

RBKC Contact Lines over Carnival Weekend

The Council will be making its "Streetline" the point of contact on a 24-hour basis over the Carnival Weekend in 2007; this answers criticism from some residents in 2006 that they were unable to contact the Council to report matters that concerned them. This service will be via:

March 2007 marks the 200th Anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Britain. The Film "Amazing Grace", due for release in February, provides a fascinating insight into the campaign by William Wilberforce to get Parliament to legislate to change the law. The London Notting Hill Carnival Route for 2007

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and the City of Westminster, in the absence of any agreed alternative route, have now taken the view that the carnival route for the 2007 Carnival should remain the same as that used last year. A decision on this is normally made in January in order that the detailed planning leading up to the Carnival in August can commence with a high degree of certainty.

How many people visit Carnival?

Estimating the total number of people who visit Carnival each August Bank Holiday is still more of an art than a science. The Panorama band contest on the Saturday evening attracts a more limited crowd than come on the Sunday and Monday. The police estimated that in 2005 there were about 250,000 on the Sunday and 500,000 on the Monday; in 2006 they estimated that there were about 330,000 on the Sunday and about 500,000 on the Monday. The media often quote attendance at Carnival as one million but this is the total over the whole weekend so is misleading in terms of the total number of people there at any one time. In spite of claims that the Carnival is getting bigger each year, whatever that means, the evidence taken over many years does not support this.
